Braced Myths Wanted From Any Field of Knowledge

In 2010 I discovered a problem that seems to have stemmed from orthodox experts engaging in unscholarly attempts to identify and bust myths. I discovered this problem whilst fact checking a most famous story of the impact of bad data on policy making.

Definition of Braced Myths
I named the phenomenon the Braced Myth and defined it as precisely as I could.
Note: Braced Myths are started by orthodox experts and are then braced by orthodox expert sceptics who - by way of their own scholarship - think they are true and so use them, with painful irony, as examples of the need to be healthily sceptical.

Are you aware of a case where orthodox experts have created myths, fallacies, pseudo scholarship or other junk science that has then been believed by experts who, with unintentional irony, in turn, used it as an example to support the need to be sceptical of 'bad science', pseudo scholarship and other counterknowledge? As you can see, what I am looking for has three very specific components (1) the creationof a fallacy, myth or error by an orthodox expert and (2) it being used by another expert who in turn promotes it as being ‘true’ and (3) promotes it as a good example of the need to be healthily sceptical of that which is not so.

I suspect that braced myths are likely to be quite rare. But once found, each one will most certainly be a case of the most exquisite irony.
In 2011 I found two more - this time interrelated - braced myths. These are in the field of criminology and are currently relied upon to support the notion that beat policing is per se ineffective in tackling and reducing crime.

What is the Social Significance of Braced Myths?

To seek to gauge the social significance of Braced Myths I am looking for further examples from any field of knowledge.
I would be most grateful if anyone could kindly let me know of any others.

I can't think of a successful braced myth, but I know of an attempt to create one. In the 1970s, there were a lot of scary reports in the popular press that a new ice age was impending. Now climate skeptics want us to believe that this was the prevailing view in the scientific community as well. And they do so as an example of the need to be more skeptical of climate science. However, Mark Bowen in his book Censoring Science points out that there was never more than a handful of people in the scientific community who believed this. I checked the scientific literature of the 1970s, and my impression is that Bowen is right. I don't know of any serious scientists who endorse this myth, so I don't think it qualifies as a braced myth.

DEATH BY SPINACH: When Bad Science Kills Tens of Thousands of People Every Year Should We Ask: Who Are the Real Criminals?

In his best selling book 'Bad Medicine’ Goldacre (2008) informs us that an untenable research design in its clinical trials skewed the results for the painkiller Vioxx leading it to be withdrawn from the market in 2004 after causing some 30,000 deaths among an estimated 88,000 to 139,000 victims of heart attacks caused by the drug.

Is current USDA bad science advice killing people?

Yesterday, Best Thinking featured an article that I wrote accusing the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) of promoting the harmful bad science fallacies that 'spinach is a good source of iron' and that 'taking vitamin C with spinach will significantly make it an even better source of iron' (Sutton 2011a).
US nutrition expert Nestle (2007) has written extensively on the how the US food industry influences the USDA's nutrition advice, which is then disseminated on its extensive and authoritative website and relied upon throughout the world.
I suspect that we will never know the extent of the damage, if any, caused by USDA perverse promotion of spinach as a good source of iron.
What we do know is that USDA nutrition advice is so influential and trusted that it can be found reproduced and cited in tens of thousands of printed and Website nutrition guides. Just Google around for ten minutes on the subject of food and nutrition and you will see what I mean.
Research on the global problem of iron deficiency (Stoltzfus 2003) reveals that, globally, iron deficiency ranks in the top 10 among 26 risk factors included in the 'Global Burden of Diseases 2000':
‘ Iron deficiency accounts for 841,000 deaths and 35,057,000 disability-adjusted life years lost. Africa and parts of Asia bear 71% of the global mortality burden and 65% of the disability-adjusted life years lost, whereas North America bears 1.4% of the global burden. There is an urgent need to develop effective and sustainable interventions to control iron-deficiency anaemia. This will likely not be achieved without substantial involvement of the private sector.
Can Popeye save us from iron deficiency?
I have in my hand a 13.5oz can of Popeye brand spinach from the USA. It says on the can that ½ a cup (115g and 1/3 of a can) contains 10% of the daily iron values recommended for someone on a 2000 calorie a day diet. Surely then that must mean that an entire can is being promoted as containing 30% of the total iron RDA for such a person. And so that must mean that three cans would be sufficient to provide 90% of their daily iron needs. For clarity, let me add that the USA food labeling guidance is based upon a non-pregnant woman aged 18-50.
So, perhaps the private sector can indeed help out with canned spinach?
Let’s check. First of all we need to ask how what it says on my can of spinach can possibly be true, when accepted orthodox scientific evidence has it that at best only 15 percent of the iron in spinach can be absorbed by people eating it.
We need to do the math, which, incidentally, is a subject Popeye often struggled with.
Current scientific knowledge is that we can absorb no more than 1 mg of the 6.6 mg of iron that is at most likely to be found in a standard 13.5 oz can of spinach (see Sutton 2011b). This means that if no other source of iron is available, a man aged 19-50 would in fact need to eat at least eight cans of spinach every day to get his required level of iron, a woman of the same age would need to eat 18 cans, and a pregnant woman would need to consume a nauseating 27, which - at 10 oz of solid matter per can when drained - is well over a stone (14 lb) of the stuff.
Science suggests spinach does not do what it says on the spinach can!
So in realty, it’s an unrealistically gut churning 18 cans per person a day that would in fact be required - and not three cans a day - to come close to providing the daily recommended iron for a non pregnant woman aged between 18 and 50 on the recommended 2000 calorie per day diet.

Death by Spinach?

If poor nutrition directly kills, and in other cases takes years from lifespans, it seems reasonable to speculate that erroneous nutrition advice, if relied upon, might do likewise.

We can only hope that not a single one of the tens of millions of lost years of life globally - and the many hundreds sometimes thousands of deaths that happen as a direct result of iron deficiency each year in the USA - are due to bad science promoted by the USDA. And we can only hope that the hundreds of thousands of deaths occurring each year on Earth (Stoltzfus 2003) from iron deficiency are not due to private sector and global USDA bad science promotion of spinach as a good source of iron. Because, surely, that should be 'criminal'.

Punterization in the Spin@ge: The USDA is Bull-Spreading on Spinach, Iron and Vitamin C

Punterization describes well any treatment whereby customers of a service suffer rather than benefit as a result of sub-standard advice, attitudes and policies.
In an article on Besthinking (http://www.bestthinking.com/articles/science/chemistry/biochemistry/spin-ge-usa-beware-of-the-bull-the-united-states-department-of-agriculture-is-spreading-bull-about-spinach-iron-and-vitamin-c-on-the-internet) I produce substantial evidence to support the assertion that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is punterizing everyone who follows their advice about spinach being a good source of iron. And the USDA appears not to care about the impact that advice may have upon the health of those who eat spinach in the belief that it is a good dietary source of iron.
The USDA’s information that cooked spinach is a good source of iron is irrational because it punterizes any recipient of it by denying them the ability to make rational choices about what they should eat as a good source of iron.
Frankfurt (2007: 63) explains: “To be rational is fundamentally a matter of being appropriately responsive to reasons.”
Since reasons are constituted of facts, the fact that humans cannot absorb any more than 15 percent of the iron that is in spinach means that it is irrational to consider it to be a good source of nutritional iron.
Frankfurt’s (2007:84) proposition that: “The heart of rationality is to be consistent; and being consistent in action or thought, entails at least proceeding so as not to defeat oneself”, seems to me to be an abstract ideal that does not fit complex realities where individual ambition interacts with organizational aims and sub-culture; where for example a person may lie in order to achieve goals and be rewarded accordingly. For example, the USDA is an organization with core aims to provide both nutritional advice, and support for the agricultural and food industry. Therefore, its employees may find that being absolutely objective and honest about the fact that spinach is not a good source of iron will cause them more grief and less advancement than being disingenuous in their nutrition advice to the general public.
Arguably, some experts working within the USDA are attempting to get away from the fact that hardly any of the iron in spinach can be absorbed by those who eat it by disseminating harmful counterknowledge about the power of vitamin C to aid absorption.
This official quackmongery is perhaps rational as far as their responsibilities to agriculture and the food industry go but is irrational regarding their responsibilities to the general public.
When official government sources disseminate questionable information they create potentially harmful spuriofacts.   
Arguably, the USDA is an organisation that is influenced on the iron in spinach issue, indirectly and structurally - rather than consciously and deliberately - by its obligations to the US spinach industry. If this is indeed the case, then the official USDA spinach is a good source of iron advice is of itself inherently irrational but the reasons for providing it are rational.
That said, blogging here to rationalize the dissemination of spuriofacts is one thing, allowing it to continue once discovered is another.
The dissemination of harmful nutrition counterknowledge by an official US Government department is not acceptable and should cease. That is the point of my latest article Spinage

Routine Activities Theory, The Internet and the 15-Year Crime Drop

Abstract:

Since the Routine Activities Theory (RAT) is a theory of how crime shifts and changes in relation to changes in society - and according to Felson and Boba (2010)    the key to such changes is the technology of everyday life - then a significant amount of online activity and games console playing at home might be keeping people off the streets for significant periods every day and reducing the amount of hourly availability of victims and offenders in the offline world, while ensuring homes are occupied more. If it is, and yet that is not responsible for the currently unfathomable 15 year decline in violent crime, car crime and burglary in the Western world then routine activities alone may be nothing like as a good an explanation for high volume crime as its adherents think it is. Of course, the 15 year crime drop in the offline world may be taking place in a direct inverse relationship with online facilitated offending such as fraud, stalking, virus spreading, hacking and copyright theft etc - which RAT would explain. This appears to be an important issue with huge implications for criminology and crime reduction policy making.
Today many people routinely spend hours in cyberspace as part of their everyday lives. Could the huge popularity of the Internet and other interactive hi-technology environments, facilitated by mobile communications equipment and games consoles, be responsible for the 15-year fall in crime?
Marcus Felson's excellent and classic criminology book: "Crime and Everyday Life" is without doubt, and deservedly so, one of the best selling criminology texts of all time. Now in its fourth edition (Felson and Boba 2010   ), the book provides an explanation of, justification for and a toolkit to implement crime reduction initiatives using Felson's Routine Activities Theory (RAT).
What is RAT?
RAT is, according to Felson and Boba (2010), a "...theory of how crime changes in response to larger shifts in society. The key to such change is the technology of everyday life, which organizes where we are, what we do, and what happens to us. That technology governs how crime carves its niche into everyday life." According to Willison (2000   ): "This theory has its intellectual roots in the human ecology work of Amos Hawley   , which recognises the importance of the timing of different activities by hour-of-day and day-of-week for understanding human society. This last point is central to routine activity theory, which addresses changes from moment to moment and hour to hour in relation to what people are doing, where they are, and the consequences of these as a result."
The unexplained fall in crime
Crime has been falling, pretty much across the board, in the UK and USA since 1995   . And as yet there is no particularly compelling or well evidenced cause.
NetCrime: More Change in the Organisation and Disorganisation of Offending
With the advent and increasing popularity - indeed, necessity - of the Internet and the huge rise in mobile communications technology, we might have expected crime to rise dramatically from 1995 as a whole new environment called cyberspace opened up for people to exploit in criminal ways    old and new. Felson's RAT (Felson and Boba 2010 p.111) certainly sees that it should be that way: "The age of speedy Internet communications provides new options for youths to break laws, often operating out of their homes. They can produce their own pornography. They can view pornography by others. They can sell themselves as prostitutes. They can make sexual liaisons with those of their own ages or well beyond their own They can send and/or receive threats via the Internet and buy or sell contraband goods. They can, at a young age, learn how to hack the computers of others or distribute computer harm in various ways. They can participate in cyber chat rooms to discuss all of this."
Is the RAT in the NET?
Strangely, Felson appears not to have considered that his own RAT would suggest that all this time spent online must equate to less time on the street leading to less potential offending time and a smaller population of available victims of violence and robbery.
Outside the X-Box
Last week as I walked through the high street in Nottingham in England at around 5pm, two teenagers of about 14 years of age stopped me in my tracks. They asked if I would go with them into a local store called "Game" and just stand there pretending to be their grandfather (grandfather!) so that they could exchange a new video game for one that was rated (18) - adult only. I felt some sympathy for them but let them know that as I was no relative of theirs that I would not help them out as it would be illegal.
That encounter got me thinking.
Two teenagers - full of the kind of spirit that can get a young man into trouble with the law - wanted nothing more than to sit at home and no doubt spend hours playing some violent and exciting interactive game. Could the rise in game playing of this kind on Playstations, X-Boxes, Nintendo. PCs and online be a major cause of what criminologists are saying is an unfathomable drop in crime? And if not then why not - since RAT would predict that if a substantial number of young people are not on the streets either as victims or offenders then overall high volume crime "opportunities" would diminish, resulting in an overall drop in high volume crime rates. Myself and my colleague Paul Hamilton    were discussing this today. We have no idea yet whether what we might call the "game substitution hypothesis" is plausible. So we thought we would set out some ideas that support it as something possibly worthy of further exploration:
  • Research suggests some young people are spending many hours on the Internet or on games consoles.
  • Research has failed to establish that violent media is either a necessary or sufficient condition for causing crime.
  • Research suggests that computer games can be addictive (immersion and unreality factors) and playing can be compulsive.
Taking a Routine Activity Approach, it would seem that an increase in computer gaming might feasibly lead to a rise in the illicit market for stolen PC's and games consoles. But there might be fewer thieves to supply it if:
  • Fewer potential offenders are getting addicted to opiates and other drugs or misusing alcohol out of boredom because they have escaped boredom in the real world by entering a more exciting cyberspace to play and interact with others.
  • Potental offenders and victims are becoming gaming "addicts" and/or compulsively checking Facebook or other social networking sites.
  • The game players and other "netizens" are playing at home so (a) fewer potential offenders on the streets and fewer potential victims (b) houses are occupied for longer and so less susceptible to burglary.
  • Immersion and gaming prowess and reputation may be sufficient substitutes for the same things in the offline (real) world (some anomie issues to research here).
  • The Internet allows more people to work from home so teleworking may reduce the pool of "available" victims on the street and also ensure fewer homes are empty during the day.
Jeff Ferrell's Cultural Criminology paper    on boredom does not examine this issue. Instead he focuses upon how boring modern life is caused by workplace and urban planning that forbids spontaneity. Spontaneity leads to friction with the criminal justice system. The "system" offers us places of entertainment such as shopping malls, cinema and night clubs - all to be used only in proscribed ways, which leads therefore to expressive offending or else boredom that is one cause of drug misuse leading to addiction.
But gaming is a manufactured entertainment virtual space. Ferrell's argument might explain why virtual vandalism is committed. Mathew Williams' excellent paper: Understanding King Punisher and his Order    is a good example. But Ferrell does not consider how a manufactured environment - online or offline - might reduce crime.

If it is, and yet that is not responsible for the currently unfathomable 15 year decline in violent crime, car crime and burglary in the Western world then routine activities alone may be nothing like as a good an explanation for high volume crime as its adherents think it is. How might Game Substitution and Crime be Researched?
Very tentatively (back of an envelope stuff this afternoon) we thought researchers might:
  • Measure time spent gaming by groups that research predicts are at greater risk of becoming offenders.
  • Conduct ethnographic studies with young people to gauge whether, and if so to what extent, gaming is used as a substitute for risky activities in the offline (real) world. And do this in relation to both potential offending and victimisation.
  • Examine issues of offline and online peer status.
  • Examine (correlation) between console and game sales - and any data on playing time and type of games - with the general crime trend over the past 20 years.
  • Try to gauge what percentage of young people today have access to or own the hardware necessary to play video games.
A quick Google search reveals that a few other thinkers are making similar speculations:
We now need to research this issue to test the Crime Substitution Hypothesis.
Another thing that may have reduced crime, through people spending more time at home, is public smoking bans.

Postscript 9th February 2011

Last week I sent this blog to two academic friends who are experts in hi-tech/cybercrime: professors David Wall and Majid Yar. I spoke also with Professor Graham Farrell about it yesterday. All there kindly commented on the hypothesis. We are all of the tentative opinion that this seems like a rational hypothesis worthy of further research.
Wall, Yar and Farrell offered some ideas as to how the hypothesis might be tentatively explored. In our brief correspondence and conversations we agreed that the best way forward might be to examine lifestyle and crime surveys to gauge any changes over time between "going out behaviour" and "time spent indoors". We need to look at changes over the past 15 years or so in terms of time spent watching entertainment programming (TV; DVDS).
I would also propose that we need to distinguish between people entering cyberspace (gaming, Internet) indoors (at home) and those who are using public areas to do the same (libraries, cybercafés, gaming centres and, in particular, mobile telecoms.).

The actual crime opportunity notion of Routine Activities Theory is a myth based on an error of reasoning because it depicts opportunity as exiting as an objective reality, where in fact a crime opportunity is completely dependent upon relative physical vulnerabilities that only appear as opportunities to motivated offenders based upon their perceptions of their own abilities, the value of targets and the vulnerabilities of people and physical security. Uncovering the Most Sensational Science Fraud Since Piltdown Man

The world's leading experts (including Charles Darwin, Alfred Wallace and Richard Dawkins) agree that Patrick Matthew, not Darwin or Wallace, originated the full theory of evolution by natural selection. However, Darwin convinced the world that neither he nor any other naturalist had read it before he and Wallace replicated it and claimed it as their own. Darwin told several lies about the scientific readership of Mathew's book. Independently verifiable facts in this book prove it. Darwin's lies concealed what he had twice been told in writing about the pre-1858 readership of Patrick Matthew's prior-published theory. This discovery of Darwin's proven sly dishonesty, added to Sutton's original bombshell discovery of the "New Data" that several highly influential naturalists, who Darwin and Wallace knew, in fact did read and then cite Matthew's (1831) book containing his original breakthrough before Darwin and Wallace (1858) and Darwin (1859) replicated it without citing Matthew, uncovers the world's most sensational case of plagiarising science fraud by glory theft. The Latin phrase "Nullius in Verba" has been the motto of Britain’s famous Royal Society – one of the oldest learned societies in the world – since the 17th century. It means that we should not accept that something is true based solely on anyone’s word regardless of his or her authority or stature. Sutton has brought his considerable expertise in understanding what causes crimes of intellectual and property theft to the area of scientific discovery theft.
